Why did you make the decision to attend business school? Why now?
I’ve always been driven by a burning desire to create meaningful change. Working within the public sector in Mauritius, I realized the limitations of my expertise in scaling the level of impact I envisioned. I figured out that to truly effect the change I aspire to, I needed a more robust skill set and a powerful network. For me, business school represents more than an academic pursuit; it’s a personal quest to expand my impact. It’s about immersing myself in an environment that nurtures growth and leadership, equipping me with the tools to amplify my efforts in driving positive social change. This journey feels like an invitation to step into a realm where I can evolve from being an advocate for change to a catalyst for it.
Why did you choose ESCP Business School? What factors figured most prominently into your decision of where to attend?
From the outset of my research into European MBAs, ESCP stood out as the ideal match for me. Its emphasis on a global perspective and a robust commitment to sustainability, integrated into its curriculum, deeply resonated with my aspirations. What struck me was ESCP’s integration of real-world consultancy projects into its MBA program, providing invaluable hands-on experience, which is precisely what I sought. My impression was that ESCP thrives as a dynamic ecosystem nurturing purpose-driven leaders, and I yearned to follow in the footsteps of these accomplished alumni.
What do you think is your most valuable or differentiating contribution to the Class of 2024?
Coming from a small island with just 1.2 million inhabitants, it is no surprise that being the sole Mauritian in the Class of 2024 adds a statistical uniqueness to the cohort. However, beyond this geographical rarity, my diverse background in psychology and unwavering dedication to empathy-driven leadership contribute a distinctive perspective. Growing up in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural setting, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the value of inclusivity and the significance of embracing diverse viewpoints. My goal is to foster unity amidst this diversity at ESCP, creating an environment where every voice enhances our collective experience. Moreover, I bring a positive outlook, certainly inherited from the “island vibe”, which I believe can be instrumental during intense coursework and group collaborations.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that didn’t get included on your application:
I’m usually known as someone who brings joy to the group, but I have this quirk—I can’t help but burst into laughter in serious situations. Thankfully, it tends to happen more in casual settings than professional ones, or I might find myself in a bit of a pickle! I’ve been working on keeping a straight face, but occasionally, a good laugh sneaks out.
Post-MBA career interests:
My post-MBA aspiration centers on transitioning into consulting within the social impact sector. I’m passionate about embedding responsible business practices into organizations to facilitate positive global change. I aim to work closely with socially conscious enterprises, guiding them in integrating sustainability into their core strategies. In the long term, I envision taking on a leadership role within a socially responsible organization or nonprofit. My goal is to drive initiatives that promote sustainable practices and generate significant social and environmental impact.
Advice for Current Prospective Applicants:
–What is one thing you would absolutely do again as part of your application process?
One aspect I’d absolutely repeat is the essay-writing process for my application. Those essays weren’t just about writing; they were an introspective journey. Each prompt acted as a mirror, guiding me to evaluate my past and future critically. It was a reflective exercise that led me to articulate my values, aspirations, and motivations sincerely. This process helped me see whether pursuing an MBA was truly what I wanted, steering me towards a path aligned with my genuine ambitions.
–What is one thing you would change or do differently?
One thing I’d change or do differently is to start the application process earlier. It’s quite an extensive process that demands time and energy, especially when managing it alongside full-time work. Getting an early start would have alleviated some of the pressure and allowed for a more thorough and relaxed approach
–What is one part you would have skipped if you could—and what helped you get through it?
I wouldn’t skip any part of the application; each section was instrumental in expressing my journey. It’s quite straightforward, and even though the interview can be intimidating, it’s a valuable opportunity to interact with ESCP’s staff and catch a glimpse of the school culture.
What is your initial impression of the ESCP students/culture/community?
My first impression of ESCP students was awe-inspiring. Each individual I interacted with had a fascinating background, enriching our conversations. The collaborative atmosphere was present from the very first day, transcending cultural and professional boundaries. I was also impressed by the strong sense of belonging among the ESCP community, especially from the alumni. I was struck by the latter’s willingness to help and support. They were incredibly generous with their time, offering insights, advice, and guidance without hesitation. Overall, the atmosphere at ESCP felt like a united community with a wealth of experiences, perspectives, and a shared goal of learning and growth.
What is one thing you have learned about ESCP that has surprised you?
One surprising aspect I discovered about ESCP is its notable emphasis on fostering not just leaders but a multitude of entrepreneurs. The school provides extensive support for aspiring entrepreneurs, which surprised me in the best possible way. The Blue Factory, ESCP’s startup incubator and accelerator, particularly stood out. It’s more than just a space; it’s a hub of innovation and creativity where budding entrepreneurs are nurtured. The resources, mentorship, and guidance offered through this initiative underscore ESCP’s commitment to cultivating an entrepreneurial spirit among its students. This proactive approach to encouraging entrepreneurship was unexpected and incredibly inspiring.
What is one thing you are most anxious about in your first year?
The most anxious thing for me in the first year was readjusting to student life after being away for so long. The thought of diving back into assignments, exams, and the academic setting felt daunting, especially after being out of that routine. It felt odd on the first day, like trying to find my footing again. However, the incredible professors played a significant role in alleviating those anxieties. Their guidance and the engaging coursework helped me navigate this transition smoothly. Gradually, I found my rhythm, feeling more confident with each passing day.
What is one thing you are most excited about in your first year?
Undoubtedly, what excited me the most in my first year was the interactions with my cohort. The individuals here are exceptional, not just in their intellect but in sharing values that resonate deeply with me. They’ve truly made this entire MBA experience unforgettable, not only within the classroom but also in our social interactions. Every month, there’s at least a birthday celebration, offering us a delightful glimpse into various cultures through food, music, and customs from around the world. Paris, being a vibrant city, has provided us with an incredible backdrop to make the most of these moments. The camaraderie we’ve built and the friendships formed are invaluable, creating an environment where learning transcends beyond academics and enriching our overall experience at ESCP.
